Well I think people aren't using it in modern warfare because yeah its outdated and the use of guns puts swords to a disadvantage but in my opinion its like the katana was just minimized to that of knives now. So if that was the case then katanas are used in modern warfare =P but in all seriousness the katana is more popular and since we're all otakus who watched how badass fantasy makes them it makes us choose it. As for guns it pertains to those who play call of duty or for w/e other reason and for someone with a melee weapon to even get close enough for a strike seems all but impossible. Anyways the point I'm trying to make is that we can't really tell which is better because different situations count for different kinds of outcomes.A) A katana is not a knife - different lengths, different applications, and different techniques to handle each type of weapon.
B) Fantasy is not reality.

D) If it was such a case by case ordeal, again, why aren't we using swords in combat? Obsolete things are obsolete for a reason because they are no longer valid/practical to use in an environment that is always technologically advancing. If any army/force were to use swords in combat, they'd be laughed at by the international community without impunity because it's that dumb.

Anyways... if I had to choose from the two... I might go with the Katana... a rifle will run its course... but what happens when you have no bullets left? ;)

When there are no bullets let... You attach a bayonet... Or you go back and get some ammo... Or you use grenades... Or you switch to an alternate weapon, a pistol...
Anyway... How are you going to run out of ammo...? You have to fight a like... platoon to use all your ammo...

That's not possible. You can't split a bullet with a katana in such a way that it'll not hit you. I think the blade would be destroyed and unusable if you cut several bullets...
Then... against a rifle, an automatic one... You're not cutting bullets at that rate... xD
And... I don't think you're going to cut a .50 cal.... xD

The only reason I would choose the rifle is because it can kill more in a shorter amount of time. I still think the Katana looks cooler D:

As for running out of ammo... unless you're fighting squads of soldiers or a platoon or up against a really fast guy, running out of ammo against a singular opponent should not be an issue, like what ShiaSpirit mentioned. It means that you suck at aiming.

I prefer the rifle because it's more practical.

I was refering to the many users who seem to think that a katana is infallible against a bullet if you can actually cut it, not you specifically, or else I would've included a quote. Even if the bullet was sliced in half, chances are the two split pieces would also hit the wielder of the sword, which would almost be equivalent to getting shot by one bullet.

I think getting hit by two high speed objects with half the mass is worse than getting hit by a single bullet. For one, it's less aerodynamic so it's not going to pierce though the body, it's going to shred through the body. The only way it will help is if you were wearing body armor. However, if the bullet was going at your head... You're screwed...

If it's a single bulet I wouldn't say it's impossible... but then again it depends on the distance between the person shooting and the one getting shot at...
