[Locked] 2012 Real? Or A Scare Tactic?

With what I have read and heard about 2012 its is believe that the Mayan Calender shows that in date December 21 or 24, 2012 the world will end.

But seems that the world has "ended" many times

My teacher and I discussed it and for what he told me it seems that it is just the coming of a new Age. Sort like the new century. Yes people will go crazy because of their beliefs and their way of life.

But for those who do not believe in "The End". There really is no end only a new beginning. But if you disagree or have another theory please inform me. I do love learning new things and also. If does come to an end. At least be with the ones you love.

I don't really see the point in being afraid of the end of the world. My life could end tomorrow if my luck were bad enough and I make enough stupid decisions. If the end of the world comes in 2012, so be it I say.

I like to stop by this thread every once in a while to restate my points, because futility is a hobby of mine.

First and most importantly, the Mayans do not and did not believe the world would end in 2012, and the Mayan calendar does not, in fact, even end in 2012. It's basically a bunch of confusion that is being compounded by people trying to sell movies and books. The date that people base the end of the last cycle on, is, for some reason, 1492 (the year Columbus first landed in the new world). The Mayan calender has both a 420 year cycle and a 520 year cycle in it, and it seems no one is entirely sure of which should be applied to the most current period, but most apply the 520, which means the calender would end in 2012. The only problem with this is that 1492 is not the end of the previous cycle. 1594 is. So it's much more reasonable to think the world would end in 2014 or 2114. But that's still not very reasonable. The Mayan calender works like a series of gears. More gears were added to keep the count going, and every time they noticed it was going to end, they added more. They did it about 500 years ago when they realized 1594 would be the end, and they'd probably do it now if they hadn't been mostly exterminated and lost a lot of culture and knowledge in the process.

The gist of all of this, once again, is that the Mayan calender provides NO REASON WHATSOEVER to think the world will end in 2012.

Other ancient cultures seem to think of the date as somewhat important, but not exceedingly so. And they probably has astrological reason for this.

So it's all a bunch of hogwash and propaganda that is currently a very popular marketing scheme.

I forgot all about the mayan calendar. It's quite plausible, that the mayans believed that they went far enough for the time being and that 2012 was quite a bit ahead.

It's also possible that the reason the calendar wasn't continued was because the Europeans came and began conquering them. Thus, more pressing issues were placed in higher priority than continuing the calendar.

what's so serious about it? it is a fail movie promotion..
and mayan calender? come on, even you can make such as that calculation from everything e.g. Some people talk about bible tells world end at 2011-11-1, or 1999-9-9 the time of 'the beast' born by nostradamus.. (All that happen was more breasts exposed and no beast..)
the only moral taught by the movie itself is "GET RICH!" and you'll be safe..

The Mayan calender has been right so far, but the thing is, it doesn't mean everything is right for everything. Don't we have nukes in space to deal with something that MAY happen?

I dunno what will happen or even if anything will happen at all so i guess we just have to wait and see. It would be nice though if the old world collapsed. This world needs change.

I said it too. I don´t put a lot of details or dates, ´cause some people don´t read them, but that you said is something we already know!!

I don´t know whythe people from other countries think it means the end, they should read more (but not bullshit).

And our Mayan traditions don´t disappear, are still with us.

you know i gotta say aftter looking and reading through, im surpised so many people have so much misinformation, both suporters of the idea and people who think its wonky. or even ideas that can be proved in a heartbeat to be really silly if you look at it for a moment, for instance the thing about them stoping on the calander because of columbus. they had made and finished it long before we even thought of coming across the pond so that thought is out. and the one about them saying its not an end. i was with you for the first few sentences of that untill i saw the bit about just being the end of the cycle and the 1512 and 1514 bit. what ive heard/read/watched about it is that its not just perceived as an "end" but a CHOICE. as either an end or a new beginning. or sumsuch. like i said before tho i personaly believe something COULD happen. and i will plan for it, but plan for it in a way that i dont waste massive amoutns of money and time on it but at the same time have a lot better chance then everyone else if worst comes to worse. so in the end i say your allowed to believe what you want to believe. this goes for bot the believers and the people who think its rubbish. i will say tho if you disagree. be mature. point it out in a way that isint insulting thee other guy.

People, those are allways bullshit movies, and in 2013 I´m going to see 2012 and shit myself of laughting.

Nostradamas also said something about 2012, and i think there is also an ancient chinese thing about it too. so that is three seperate predictions from three very unconected sources.

if anything does happen, you can bet it will be because of something people do. nuclear, or biological weapon related most likely.

I'm not even remotely worried about 2012, because the assumption that the world will end then is absolutely absurd; however, I am slightly worried about what some crazy 2012 believers might do right before the proposed end of the world, if they truly believe that the world will end the next day, as people can be truly insane if they are convinced they will not have to deal with any consequences of their actions.

See, I never believed in this either. Until I remembered a while ago that I actually wrote this in a tiny story myself long before I ever heard of this theory. :P

It was 1594. And the Columbus this was a Western misunderstanding, more or less. I'm not just saying shit, a good deal of the things I've said came from a History professor who has studied the thing, and the rest from other equally reliable sources, including an interview with a woman who was some kind of Mayan royalty.

But there does exist a large amount of misinformation, for a couple of reasons; One, there are a lot of crackpots, and two, there is a lot of things that people aren't particularly sure about. A lot of interpretation.



Nostradamus was one of history's greatest crackpots. He mentioned the world ending on specific dates more than once, with different dates, one of them being 1999. I wouldn't worry about him.

And it's my understanding that the Chinese thing isn't an end-of-the-world prophecy as much as just some significant event. I'm not entirely sure on that one, though.

Those Mayans that survived never continued it, so yeah, it won't happen.
