[Locked] What is a troll?

I was talking to a few people and something came to my attention; it seems there are as many definitions of what a troll is as there are stars in the sky. I'd like to know what you believe a troll truly is. I'd rather not hear the urban dictionary definition of what a troll is; what is a troll to you? How do you define a troll? Can someone who isn't a troll create a troll thread? Why do you believe trolls do what they do? Can someone ever stop being a troll? Feel free to add anything you feel like adding. This thread is NOT for the purpose of calling anyone out, nor is it meant to generate drama; please keep this civil and have a nice debate.

I will play devil's advocate when need be to continue the debate.

I'd say a troll is someone who created a topic or made a response with the sole purpose of pissing people off.

Trolling is when one unnecessarily ridicules someone or something at another's expense, usually with intent to amuse or be malicious.

I think a troll is a person who, for whatever reason, decides to anger or stir up confusion a community. Trolling can be done for fun, because you're feeling a desire to cause trouble or because you want some type of vengeance.

Troll threads can easily be made by a troll. That's probably the best way to do it because.. well.. I think it's much easier to troll an audience, if you make a thread of your own rather than try to do it in a thread where you aren't the main point of attention (from the beginning) hehe. I say so because when you make your own thread, people are usually inclined to at least read your post and chances of trolling go up. But I also think a troll makes itself more detectable if it makes the thread. Hehe, I have a history of trolling.


I like to troll people sometimes, hehe (but only when i feel mischievous). So I think you can stop being a troll. You can start and stop as you please, for however long you want x).. that's if you have self control, hehe.

Someone who posts solely to get other users to post in an aggressive manner for amusement.

The quoted post is an example of a troll post, and the poster is an example of a troll. So basically, for me, a troll is a simple post that is unwanted, unreasonable, and non-beneficial for the forum. Good troll posts are remembered for the luls they give and are sometimes are given recognition. However the one quoted above can be categorized as a cry for attention that's usually better off to be ignored. Posts that serve no purpose but only to bump a useless thread and call it "rebump for justice" can also be classified as trolls which maybe redeemed if people would think otherwise. Posts that are made only to ruin other people's fun can be also considered as trolls.

I beg to differ, I say only about 70%. Though some posts in incoherent babbling matches my description they actually abide by the context of the original poster (ie: Rate the above user's avatar) Even though it doesn't really have no purpose but make the one above you blush or get mad what they post is inside the intentions of the original thread maker, wherever he is...
